L Visas
Requirements
You must meet the following requirements to pursue an intra-company transfer L visa
- You must have worked abroad for your company for at least one uninterrupted year within the last three years
- The United States company must be related (i.e. same employer subsidiary or affiliate) to the foreign company
- Both companies must continue to do business during the period of the transfer
- You must have been employed abroad as a manager or executive or in a position involving "specialized knowledge"
- You must be employed in the United States in the same capacity as you were abroad
- You must be qualified for the position
- You must intend to depart the United States when the visa expires
Special Note: After one year in L status, you may begin the application process for permanent residency if the foreign company
continues to actively do business.
Duration of Visa
L visas are generally initially granted for up to three years. A manager's or executive's total stay in L status may not exceed seven years. A specialized knowledge worker's stay in L status may not exceed five years.
