Naturalization

If a person wishes to become a United States citizen they must first meet certain requirements.

Citizenship through Naturalization Application requirements

  • Be a Lawful Permanent Resident (green card holder) for 5 years: or 3 years if married to and residing with a US Citizen spouse.

  • Be 18 years old

  • Have spent at least half the past 5 years or 3 years if married to a US citizen physically within the United States

  • Have lived in the jurisdiction where you plan to file for at least 3 months

  • Demonstrate “good moral character” and an attachment to the principles of the US Constitution

  • Possess basic English skills and knowledge of the history and the government of the United States

  • Willing to take the Oath of Citizenship

People with certain ideological beliefs (Communism, Nazi, etc) , have deserted the US military, or have certain criminal charges may not be eligible for Naturalization

Derivative Citizenship

Certain minor children can obtain US citizenship based on the naturalization of their parents. A certificate of citizenship can be obtained as evidence of citizenship.

Derivative citizenship is automatically obtained when the following conditions are met:

  • At least one parent is a US citizen either by birth or naturalization

  • Child is under the age of 18

  • Child is a lawful permanent resident
